Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) requiring long-term management. TREATMENT: • Medical management — aminosalicylates, steroids, immunosuppressants, biologics • Surgical treatment — colectomy, ileostomy, resection of affected bowel segments, stricturoplasty (Crohn's) INDICATIONS FOR SURGERY: • Failed medical therapy • Bowel perforation or obstruction • Cancer or pre-cancerous changes • Severe hemorrhage • Toxic megacolon
